The Most Commonly Used Leso Designs

Leso designs have progressed over the years from straightforward spots and borders to a huge assortment of elaborate patterns of all imaginable motifs and colours. Today when a leso of new design emerges, you will find it printed in up to 4 or 5 various colour combinations. Leso colours are always bold and striking.

Most leso have a floral design. Fruits such as the cashew (Mkanju) and its nut (korosho), the mango and tangerine are also popular. The attractive paisley pattern makes a beautiful leso border. According to us there is no particular criterion used for the design vis-à-vis the saying, but the colour of the central design has to match or rhyme with the border and the background colour combinations. Repeating designs such as circles, squares and diamonds are also quite common and form beautiful patterns on the leso, as do intricate abstract designs.

Some of the leso designs have ideas borrowed from other cultures such as the Indian “bandhani” design. This is a circular design, which is achieved through securing the fabric over a frame and then tying several knots on the fabric over several nails. The fabric is then dyed and the result is a beautiful circular pattern with a dot in the middle. This design appears on several lesos.

Leso designs have also changed with the times. Many designs today are bigger, bolder and have stronger colours. Perhaps this is the reflection of women becoming more assertive and wanting to have a stronger presence.
